A Designation of Origin with 93 Years of History

The Utiel-Requena Designation of Origin was established in 1932 and covers the inland area of the province of Valencia. It comprises nine municipalities: Camporrobles, Caudete de las Fuentes, Fuenterrobles, Requena, Siete Aguas, Sinarcas, Utiel and Venta del Moro.

Archaeological remains found in settlements such as La Solana de las Pilillas (Requena) and Las Pilillas (Utiel), together with ancient Iberian wine presses, demonstrate that winemaking activity in this region dates back to the 7th century BC. These findings confirm the long-standing viticultural tradition of Utiel-Requena and its deep historical roots.

A Journey Marked by Major Milestones

The history of Utiel-Requena is shaped by key moments such as:

  • In 1957, the region’s wineries were officially recognised under the Utiel-Requena Designation of Origin.

  • The expansion and modernisation of wineries during the 20th century.

  • The consolidation of Bobal as the region’s flagship grape variety and a symbol of identity.

Identity and Heritage

This region has a long and rich winemaking tradition. Bobal, its native grape variety, represents around 70% of the vineyard area and is the true hallmark of the DO Utiel-Requena.

The legacy of centuries of dedication to vine cultivation and winemaking is reflected in its underground cellars, traditional presses, and unique winemaking architecture. Today, DO Utiel-Requena combines heritage and innovation, producing wines that are recognised both nationally and internationally.
