A Designation of Origin with 94 Years of History

The Utiel-Requena Designation of Origin was established in 1932 and covers the inland area of the province of Valencia. It comprises nine municipalities: Camporrobles, Caudete de las Fuentes, Fuenterrobles, Requena, Siete Aguas, Sinarcas, Utiel and Venta del Moro.

Archaeological remains found in settlements such as La Solana de las Pilillas (Requena) and Las Pilillas (Utiel), together with ancient Iberian wine presses, demonstrate that winemaking activity in this region dates back to the 6th century BC. These findings confirm the long-standing viticultural tradition of Utiel-Requena and its deep historical roots.

“Origin is the only thing that cannot be taken away from you.” — MW Pedro Ballesteros

A Journey Marked by Major Milestones

The history of Utiel-Requena is shaped by key moments such as:

  • In 1957, the region’s wineries were officially recognised under the Utiel-Requena Designation of Origin.

  • The expansion and modernisation of wineries during the 20th century.

  • The consolidation of Bobal as the region’s flagship grape variety and a symbol of identity.

Identity and Heritage

This legacy has resulted in the Utiel-Requena DO boasting 30,483 hectares of vineyards in production, 103 wineries, and 4,213 winegrowers, making wine the economic engine of the region.

The work of our wineries and winegrowers yields remarkable figures, such as the sale of Utiel-Requena DO wines in 90 countries, the issuance of 27.7 million back labels annually, and a strong commitment to native varieties, like Bobal, which covers 18,933 hectares and represents 62% of the vineyards. In short, Utiel-Requena DO wines embody origin, quality, and tradition.
