CONSEJO REGULADOR or REGULATORY BOARD (A government official body which is responsible for and supervises a specific, recognised wine growing area known as a Denominación de Origen (DO)

The Regulatory Board is headquartered in the city of Utiel in the building known as Bodega Redonda (Round Winery) built in 1981. This construction is emblematic for its peculiar round shape which gives its name. Apart from being the administrative offices of theConsejo Regulador, the circular building is used as the Museum of Vine and Wine, where visitors come every day.

The management of the Denominación de Origen Protegida Utiel-Requena (Protected Designation of Origin), is entrusted to its Consejo Regulador (Regulatory Board), which is constituted as a body representing registered growers and wineries.

The defense of the Designation of Origin, the application of its rules, the monitoring of compliance with its regulations, as well as the promotion and control of its wine quality are entrusted to the Consejo Regulador (Regulatory Board) of the Utiel Requena PDO, the Council competent in the field of agriculture and food and the Ministry competent in the field of food and agriculture, as well as to the European Union. Each one in the field of their respective competencies.

The purposes of the Consejo Regulador (Regularoty Board) are the representation, defense, warranty, research, protection and promotion of its protected products, as well as the developing markets.

The Consejo Regulador (Regulatory Board) is a non-profit organization, and in its performances is governed by the provisions of the law 24/2003 of July 10th of the Vine and the Wine; by the law 2/2005, May 27th of the Generalitat Valenciana and the management of the Wine Sector of the region of Valencia, as well as by their respective implementing rules and by its own regulation. The Consejo Regulador (Regulatory Board) is a corporation under public law with its own legal personality.

The Consejo Regulador regulation (Regulatory Board regulation) in force is the ORDER 2/2011, August 24th, of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Water, which approves the regulations and specifications of the Protected Designation of Origin Utiel-Requena and its regulatory board.

This was later modified by: ORDER 4/2011, November 16th, of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Water that modifies the Order 2/2011, August 24th of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Water, which approves the regulations and specifications of the Protected Designation of Origin Utiel-Requena and its regulatory board.

At present, according to the UNE EN-45011, or standard that replaces the Regulation is the document that contains the socio-economic standards of the Regulatory Board and there is a new document called tender documents containing technical regulations.
